Goalkeepers start New Year with brilliant penalty saves.

6 January, 2002 (Round – 7)

Welcome back, and a Happy New Year to you all. The fog lifted over Delhi and although some teams still had players on holiday most turned up on a day Aman Banerji and Aditya Bhasir made brilliant penalty saves for the Mighty Atoms and Team Tigers. The Mighty Atoms were out in full force but the Lightning Strikers had players missing, though they weren’t missing any of their fighting spirit and gave the Atoms what must be their toughest match so far.

Ledlie(right) scored again to become top scorer

Only two late goals from their top scorer Aditya Kapur and Aman Banerji’s fabulous diving save from Karan Dev Verman’s penalty gave them a hard fought 2-0 victory.

Finally, there was some good news for the Super Cubs as they beat the Happy Hawks. This time it was the Hawks who were missing some players and the Cubs took advantage as Shaunak Kumar, Suraj Singh and Aniket scored in a 3-1 victory. But Imaad Lalljee’s consolation goal for the Hawks must be one of the goals of the season. Receiving the ball with his back to goal in the center circle he turned a defender and began a run that took him past a second defender before hitting a right foot shot that went in of the underside of the post. Bravo.

The Tigers came out firing on all their cylinders as they took on the Red Hot Suns and a midfield battle ensued. Aditya Bhasir was quite brilliant in goal and made a stunning one-handed penalty save to keep the Suns at bay. But a Raghav Bhasin shot late in the game went through him and as the Tigers threw men forward in search of an equaliser, the Suns counter attacked and Gautam Anand scored with a beautiful looping header to make it 2-0 and end any chance of a Tigers comeback.

Game four of the day had everyone rubbing their hands in expectation. Would the Ninjas be able to stop 'the hurricane' Ledlie? It was a game of 'end-to-end' football in another ten-goal thriller, which the Hurricanes won 6-4. Siddharth Khanna (3) and Prithvi Dev got goals for the Ninjas, and Shivraj Bhasin and Ledlie for the Hurricanes. To answer the question, Ledlie got five of them.
