Winter break must rejuvenate Cubs fighting spirit.

16 December, 2001 (Round – 6)

The league goes into a two-week break for the New Year, which will bring welcome relief to the Super Cubs. On a cold and foggy morning they played with only five players against the full strength Hurricanes. An 8-1 score had more to do with the Cubs inability to chase back and defend when they lost the ball rather than their missing players.

Round 6. And the sun finally comes out.

The Hurricanes striker, Nikhil Ledlie was initially denied by some good goalkeeping but he came back after the break to score five times as the Cubs folded. Uday Vir Singh and Vidur Bharatram got a goal each while Shaunak Kumar scored again for the Cubs.

The Mighty Atoms also had a player missing. Aditya Kapoor, their top scorer was down with fever and it gave Pratap Atwal an opportunity to show everyone his finishing skills. Four neatly taken goals against the Tigers gave them a 4-2 victory. Sanjan Sabherwal showed great courage to come back and score for the Tigers after he was hit on the eye and Ishaan Khosla got the other but they were beaten by the team who are living up to their name.

Game three of the day, and the ‘sun’ came out in more ways than one. The Red Hot Suns were looking brighter than the one in the sky as Sahib Singh returned to face the Lightning Strikers. Never expect a dull match when the Suns are playing, and true to form this game was another thriller. The Lightning Strikers did not disappoint either. Palash Joshi was dangerous with his constant running and scored for the Strikers, and Ashwin Hoon got his first goal in the league after playing in goal in the first half. Sahib got two goals for the Suns, but neither team could get the winner as the game finished at 2-2.

There was another first time scorer in game four as Uday Raj Arora hit a beautiful volley for the opening goal as the Ninjas beat the Happy Hawks 4-0. The Hawks were unlucky as Imaad Lalljee’s strikes were marginally off target. Prithviraj Dev (2) and Siddharth Khanna scored for the Ninjas in one of their easier victories.

The league resumes on the 6th of January 2002. We at the India Youth Soccer Association wish you all a Happy New Year. And anyone who can stop the Mighty Atoms certainly will.
