"Glory,
Glory..." Mighty Atoms, champions of
the league!
17 Febuary, 2002 (Round - 13)
The Mighty Atoms took the league title with
a flourish just as Manchester United have
been doing in England. Sir Alex Ferguson
must have passed on a few secrets to the
Atoms manager Rahul Kapur as the Atoms won
the 1st IYSA Mini League title with a game
to spare. As most had hoped, the Championship
decider did not go to final round as the
Atoms beat the Happy Hawks 6-0. Two early
goals from Aditya Kapur got the Atoms off
to a great start and two own goals killed
the contest. By half time the Atoms were
four nil up and had the championship in
their grasp. Kapur scored another for his
hat trick and Pratap Atwal got one for himself.

The Lightning Strikers did extremely well today
but Little Ninjas held them to a 1-1 draw. Palash
Joshi put the Strikers ahead but Prithvi Dev equalized
for the Ninjas.
The Super Cubs also played their hearts out and
Aheer put them into a one nil lead against the
Red Hot Suns. They held on to the lead for a long
time but goals from Gautam Anand (2) and Raghav
Bhasin gave the Suns a 3-1 come from behind win.
Our best matches are reserved for the end. And
as usual today was no exception. Team Tigers had
their war makeup on when they faced the Ten Hurricanes
and stole an early lead through Sanjan Sabherwal.
Nikhil Ledlie cancelled out Sanjan's strike to
make it one all. But Sanjan again put the Tigers
ahead when he shot home with his weaker right
foot. The Tigers were holding the Hurricanes at
bay till a couple of mistakes at the back. Ledlie
and Shivraj Bhasin made them pay for it and gave
the Hurricanes the lead for the first time.
When Ledlie picked up another loose clearance
and hit a superb left foot shot into the roof
of the net to make it 5-2 it looked over for the
Tigers, but Sanjan and Ishaan Kapoor had other
ideas and combined brilliantly for the 'move of
the tournament' to pull one back for the Tigers.
As
the Tigers manager, Jane Sabherwal, told them
to press harder, Sanjan put the ball in the net
but was ruled offside. Then Ledlie stole away
from the Tigers defence for his fifth and sealed
a 6-3 win.
Any
team that wins eleven out of thirteen matches
deserves to be top. Congratulations, The Mighty
Atoms, champions of the league.
